Undergraduate Catalog (2026-2027)

Transfer Credit

Transfer course credit is generally accepted in from regionally accredited higher education institutions provided such transfer courses meet the degree requirements at SWU in terms of the nature, content, and level of the learning experience and its appropriateness and applicability to the programs offered by SWU.  Transfer credit may be considered from unaccredited higher education institutions on a case by case basis.

  • Transfer credit may not be counted among the final 32 hours of the degree in general, excluding program hours earned through recognized cooperative programs.
  • Transfer courses with grades lower than C- will not be accepted in transfer unless specified differently by academic policy
  • College preparatory courses (generally, courses numbered less than 1000) are not eligible for transfer
  • Vocational/technical credit is generally not accepted; academic credit is review on a course-by-course basis
  • If the college/university is not accredited by a regional accrediting or College for Higher Education Accreditation Standards approved association at the time the credit was earned
  • Any student transferring to SWU from a regionally accredited College for Higher Education Accreditation Standards college/university with an Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts degree will have completed the Southern Wesleyan University’s core curriculum requirements with the noted exceptions of the religion requirements (Old Testament Survey, New Testament Survey, and Basic Christian Beliefs), and the core requirements that are embedded in the majors. Associate degree transfer students must complete at least 32 hours at Southern Wesleyan University and earn 120 credits to graduate. Bachelor degree transfer students must also complete at least 32 hours at Southern Wesleyan University and earn 120 credits to graduate. For more information, contact the Office of Academic Records.

A maximum of 68 credit hours will be awarded to a student in any combination of the following College Level Examination Program (CLEP), DSST (formerly, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests), Advanced Placement (AP) credit, approved American Council on Education (ACE) credit for prior learning courses, military credit, and departmental exams.  ACE standards are utilized to determine the minimum credit awarded.

Veterans who have successfully completed courses in a military service training program may submit an official transcript to the Office of Academic Records for review.  The amount of credit granted will not exceed that recommended by the American Council of Education in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces. No credit is awarded for technical or vocational training.  No grades are assigned for awarded credit.  Students must submit a transcript available from the military.

Requests to substitute a transfer course for a required course must be submitted by the student to the Office of Academic Records.  The course description and/or syllabus of the transfer course will be evaluated for its transferability as a substitution by the program and the school deans and/or division chairs.
