MUSC 2140 Sophomore Organ II

This course provides individualized organ instruction through weekly private lessons and a required weekly seminar/recital class. Instruction emphasizes the development of manual and pedal technique, coordination, registration, stylistic awareness, musical interpretation, and professional performance standards. Students are required to complete technical exercises and etudes for manuals and pedals, including scale, arpeggio, and pedal studies appropriate to their level, in addition to preparing repertoire that presents progressive technical and musical demands. Required repertoire includes literature representing Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th–21st century styles, drawn from the standard organ repertoire. Study will include works by composers such as J.S. Bach, Buxtehude, Franck, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Vierne, Widor, Duruflé, and contemporary composers, as appropriate. Repertoire may also include chorale-based works, liturgical repertoire, transcriptions, and ensemble or collaborative literature, as approved by the instructor.
