Undergraduate Catalog (2026-2027)

Nursing (BS)

Federal CIP: 51.3801 Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program prepares students to enter professional nursing practice through a comprehensive, faith-informed curriculum grounded in the 2021 AACN Essentials. The program combines rigorous academic study with clinical and experiential learning to develop graduates who deliver safe, evidence-based, and compassionate patient care.

The BSN curriculum integrates biological, behavioral, and nursing sciences with hands-on training in skills labs, simulation, and supervised clinical settings. Students learn to apply clinical judgment, collaborate within interprofessional care teams, advocate for diverse populations, and utilize healthcare technologies to support quality outcomes. Spiritual formation is woven throughout the program, encouraging students to view nursing as both a profession and a ministry of service, integrity, and healing.

Southern Wesleyan University awards the Bachelor of Science in Nursing upon successful completion of all degree and clinical requirements outlined in the curriculum. Graduates are eligible to apply for licensure as Registered Nurses (RN) and are well-equipped to pursue advanced study, specialty certification, and leadership roles within a variety of healthcare environments.

Required Instructional Materials

Students enrolled in the nursing program are provided access to required instructional materials through a comprehensive digital textbook and learning resources package licensed by the University from Wolters Kluwer Lippincott. This package includes required course textbooks, clinical reference materials, and integrated learning, skills, and assessment resources essential to the achievement of program outcomes and student learning objectives.

The package also includes NCLEX licensure examination preparation resources provided through Kaplan Nursing. Kaplan Nursing provides students with structured NCLEX preparation, including review content and assessment tools designed to support student readiness for licensure upon program completion.

These required instructional materials are not available through the University’s standard eCampus bookstore. Access to the digital learning resources is provided to students as part of their enrollment in the nursing program. A Nursing Student Fee is billed during the fall and spring semesters to cover the cost of these required instructional and licensure preparation resources.

Laboratory Supplies and Skills Kits

The nursing program requires students to utilize hands on laboratory supplies to support skill development and mastery of course competencies. The University contracts with an external vendor to procure program specific laboratory supplies.

Students are required to purchase an initial laboratory bag and skills kit at the beginning of the nursing program directly through the School of Nursing. The lab bag will be retained by the student and used throughout the duration of the program.

As students advance into medical-surgical nursing coursework, an additional supplemental laboratory kit will be required. This kit will contain course specific consumable supplies and will be placed inside the student’s existing lab bag. The cost of the supplemental kit will be determined prior to enrollment in the applicable course and published to students in advance.

Additional Required Student Purchases and Compliance Obligations

In addition to tuition and required program fees, students in the nursing program are responsible for purchasing and maintaining the following required items:

  • Program approved nursing uniforms

  • Clinical footwear

  • Stethoscope

  • Blood pressure cuff

  • Laboratory bag and required laboratory supplies

Students are also responsible for completing and maintaining all program and clinical compliance requirements, which include but are not limited to:

  • Required immunizations

  • Criminal background check

  • Any additional health, safety, or compliance documentation required by clinical agencies or accrediting bodies

Failure to obtain required supplies or to meet compliance requirements may result in delayed or restricted participation in laboratory or clinical experiences and may impact progression in the nursing program.
